This book left me heartbroken and stunned. There have been only a few books that have impacted me the way this book has. The poverty, abuse and tenacity of his spirit, leaves me ashamed of my own comfortable life. I wish there was a way to reach onto the pages of the book and comfort this child and to feed him.

SIDELIGHTS: Kien Nguyen's first book, The Unwanted: A Memoir, grew out of recurring nightmares associated with the fall of Saigon in 1975 and its effect on him and on his family. Nguyen and his younger brother were the sheltered children of a wealthy banker living in Nhatrang, South Vietnam, whose livelihood was taken from her by the communist. THE UNWANTED by Kien Nguyen is a passionate plea for understanding about the trials of growing up in a land you love, only to watch it become a dark and dangerous nightmare for reasons well beyond your control and to then be thrown into a new culture where your traditions mean nothing. Not only is Kien Nguyen's story of life in Vietnam as a 'half breed', as he was called, an insight into life during and after the fall of Saigon to the Vietcong but it allows the reader to truly understand the emotions and difficulties of people's lives during that time.
